President Obama is restarting the investment in nuclear energy. He's drawing criticism but little popular attention for this move that marks a pull back from the optimistic, green energy future, upon which many Americans pinned their hopes. I reviewed a book on Amazon, written by a pro-nuclear physicist, who hoped to advise Obama on energy policy -- apparently, he got his wish. The arguments, pro and con, around nuclear energy are quite complex, but ultimately the hopes for green energy go beyond relatively short term impact on carbon emissions. From my perspective, the choices are analogous to crashing off pounds with a diet of Slim Fast instead of embarking on a lifestyle change of healthy diet and regular exercise.
